Adeline's surgery will reduce her pain and preserve her hip. If she doesn't have surgery, the pain could increase as the cartridge in her hip continued wearing down and became more arthritic.
A periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a surgery where the hip socket will be cut free, rotated downward to provide more coverage for the femoral head, then the hip is re-attached with screws.
Adeline has been visiting children's hospital's since kindergarten for her hips. We started at Denver Children's Hospital, which is where we met Dr. Novais. He then moved to Boston Children's Hospital (BCH). The surgical team at BCH has done more PAO's than any hospital in the country. When you talk with Dr. Novais, his demeanor instantly puts you at ease. He has spoken to Dr. Jeremy and our family on the phone numerous times on the phone. We feel like this is the best care for our daughter. And it is well worth traveling across the country for her health.
Adeline did not have pain when she was first diagnosed when she was 6 years old, so we elected to not do surgery then. Now at age 13, she takes pain relievers twice a day. She finally shared that most days her pain on a scale of 0 to 10 is an 8.
