First Day Back

Today was the first day Adeline went to school since her surgery.  It was hard leaving her there.  I worried.  Would she would be in pain?  Would her peers be kind?  Would her teachers be compassionate?  Junior high is tough some days!!
First of all, she had many of her friends running into the office greeting her with hugs while we were there waiting for the school nurse.  Adeline's face just lit up.  They studied her schedule - deciding who was helping when.  The nurse offered support too.
A few of Adeline's teachers have been especially amazing.  Encouraging her, loving her, and just - well, being part of our village.  One of her teachers even went as far as talking to the class about helping her when she returned and also had her tell them about her surgery.  Two incredibly kind coaches have invited her to help manage their basketball team - reassuring her it's not a hassle to haul the dreaded wheelchair.
Overall, today went okay.  Most of the time her friends pushed her wheelchair in the hallway.  I know it can be awkward to go up to someone and say, here let me help you - but we all need to get better at offering and accepting help!  This world would be a brighter place, don't ya think?  A few of her friends went with her to get her short walk in during "recess."  Due to being in a wheelchair, she got an assigned seat in the lunch room which was not exactly her favorite part of the day.
Adeline has one new class this quarter where she doesn't anyone.  It's a class where you have to get materials.  And she also needed to plug in her Chromebook.  No one helped her.  She sat there and struggled in her wheelchair to do it all on her own.  It was hard on her.  She's not one to ask for help.  I'm thankful that once one of her sweet friends found this out, she found someone in the class that is now gladly going to help Adeline.  Kids are kids, I get it. They are very confused at why Adeline does not have any casts on her body.  Why does she have to be in the wheelchair?  Why can she use crutches sometimes?
She can't lift her leg right now unless she is standing and has the momentum with her crutches.  Her body was pretty weak on Saturday after a few long days.  Adeline looks at the leg that used to play 5 basketball games in one weekend - and the muscles just aren't operating very well right now.  She can't lift her leg to get into bed unless she has enough energy to use her good leg to "hook" it behind the other one and pull it up that way.  Adeline has started simple physical therapy exercises at home.  Then, starts officially next week with her favorite therapist.  We're looking forward to that :)
